  15. <p>    A young Eritrean from northern Ethiopia, William Ahmed was
  16. arrested in 1984 on suspicion of harboring guerrillas from the
  17. Eritrean People's Liberation Front and was packed off to a
  18. prison in Addis Ababa. Tortured repeatedly over the next four
  19. years, Ahmed was finally moved to a hospital. From there, he
  20. escaped to Djibouti, where he purchased a Somalian passport and a
  21. ticket to Canada.
  22. </p>
  23. <p>    Last October Ahmed set off for Canada, only to become a
  24. refugee in orbit. His journey included catching connecting
  25. flights in Cyprus, Cairo and Switzerland. When Ahmed landed in
  26. Geneva, immigration authorities found that his passport was
  27. about to expire and returned him to Cairo. But Egyptian
  28. authorities refused to grant him entry. Ahmed was flown to
  29. Cyprus, where he languished in the departure lounge of the
  30. Larnaca Airport for a few months.
  31. </p>
  32. <p>    Stopping in Cyprus on his way home to England, a Palestinian
  33. traveler fell into conversation with the distraught Ahmed and
  34. alerted the office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees
  35. in London of Ahmed's plight. Ahmed was soon assured by UNHCR
  36. that he would receive assistance in Cairo, so he flew back to
  37. Egypt. But when the Egyptians tried to send him to Somalia,
  38. Ahmed kicked and screamed. The Somalian Ambassador was called
  39. in, and he acknowledged that Ahmed would be imprisoned if he
  40. landed in Somalia. So the Ethiopian was returned to Cyprus.
  41. </p>
  42. <p>    After six more weeks, Ahmed was permitted to enter Britain
  43. in May. Today he is still in the process of securing proper
  44. travel documents, but finally he has been legally classified as a
  45. political refugee.
